Safe and healthy way to store Apples
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. This is certainly a very common phrase that you might have heard a million times but there are many people who also believe in this phrase and therefore they make sure that they eat an apple on daily basis. However, are you really sure that the apple that you are eating has the right nutrients that would help you in keeping the doctor away and keeping your health in perfect conditions. We only believe in the phrase partially because we think we are buying the best apples but we never really pay attention to the smaller details which would help in retaining the nutrients in the apple.
As per recent research paper that was published in a popular Nutrition Journal, it was sated that people consuming apples stored in fridges don’t get to imbibe the complete nutrients of apples as they lose the polyphenol contents that stay in their skin. Also, half of the individuals purchase apples from malls and shopping complexes where apples are stored in fridges and lack fresh nutrients. The people buying these apples also do not consume them immediately. They store it in fridges in their home and consume it slowly before which all important nutrients are lost. After that if you consume apples, it is just the fruit’s flesh which will not have any vitamins or nutrients.
Apples are well known for the antioxidants present in them and that is why doctors and health gurus recommend us to eat more apples. However, when you store your apple in your refrigerator the coolness inside the refrigerator eliminates all the polyphenols and antioxidants available on the outer skin of the apple and therefore the apple loses all its value. On the other hand, people should not buy refrigerated apples from the malls because they are already without any vital nutrients and just meant for the sake of taste.
In the research, patients were given apples and it was observed that people who had normal apples which were kept at room temperature were able to get more polyphenols and antioxidants and vitamins compare to those patients who were provided with apples that were stored in cool places like refrigerators. The polyphenols and other nutrients present inside the apple were able to reduce the risk of certain types of cancers and even lowering cholesterol levels. However, patients who were given stored apples did not have any changes to their body levels. They were not even able to get rid of their fatigue which should happen when eating apples.
Many experts believe that people should not buy apples from shopping malls because those apples are stored for months in cold storage before they are kept for sale in malls. Hence, they are already down in nutritional value. Hence, if you are planning to buy apples for your family you can always go to the fruit market and buy some fresh apples that are loaded with antioxidants, vitamin A and C and polyphenols. You can even try to get them straight from some farm where they sell at a lower price.
