Just about anyone can occasionally have a bad day, but when there are more of them than good days, there could be underlying problems which need to be addressed. There are some basic human needs which must be met if a person is going to be able to feel better about themselves. Let’s take a look at a few of them which are connected with the causes of low self esteem.
Most people have a need to both give and receive attention, and have some form of intimacy and sense of connection to other people. Being isolated and at home all alone can have an adverse effect on a person’s sense of self. Getting out and being involved with other people, not only fulfills this basic need, it can help the individual to feel needed by helping others.
When people feel as if they have no control over their own lives, they can lose site of all their hopes, dreams and desires. Just by getting involved in anything else can help them realize that their lives are not over and that they really are needed, and they gain the feeling of safety and security of being valuable to society.
It is not always sufficient to simply say thank you to a person. True appreciation comes from returning favors, or being there when someone needs you. This type of behavior can instill that a person has status and is being recognized for all the things they’ve done for you. It also helps them feel connected to some greater purpose than themselves.
Creativity and stimulation are not just for the inspired artists. Creative thinking is used every day in even the most common of routine tasks. When these factors are missing from the life of a person, they can become withdrawn and lose the ability to be stimulated by external interests.
People have questioned the old mystery of what meaning does life have, and it can almost drive a person crazy just trying to figure out what their purpose is, and why they should even have goals. But, without a meaning, and a purpose in life, it can be impossible to set goals, even maintain daily cleanliness.
Basic instincts of human survival still exist in that a person is needed by their tribe for all of the details of the day. The tribe has developed into families and extensions of favored friends, but the basic need to belong, and serve a purpose, is just as strong. Without a healthy balance of involvement with others, a person can easily suffer from the causes of low self esteem.
