Can You Tone Your Arms With Your Thoughts?
For the most part, diet and exercise are not what holds women back from reaching their “lose arm flab” goal. The truth is that diet and exercise are actually the least important aspects of reaching sexy arm stardom!
Generally speaking, most women know how to follow a sensible diet and exercise program. In this day and age we are flooded with fitness information on a daily basis.
But most women do NOT know how to stick to said programs for the long haul because their thought processes haven’t been optimized.
You see, a poor mental strategy will lead to massive undulations in motivation. And keeping a high level of motivation all the time is the key to sexy arm stardom. I grappled with this issue for a very long time. But I found a cure that worked.
What was my saving grace? The one and only David Burns M.D. He wrote an excellent book which provided easy to use methods for optimizing thought processes. Central to his method, was the identification of major thought distortions.
So without further ado, here are 3 major cognitive distortions you need to know today so that you have motivation tomorrow:
1. Coercive statements. The “no pain no gain” attitude that pervades our culture has kept this type of cognitive distortion alive and kicking. If you find yourself saying, “I should exercise today” or “I must exercise today”, stop immediately. Should and must are coercive words that will make you feel pressured and will eventually kill your desire to keep moving forward.
2. Label statements. If you mess up with your diet one day and call yourself a “loser” or a “failure”, you are well on your way to motivational breakdown. The issue here is that abstract labels imply that there is something internally wrong with you. For example, how do you fix a loser or a failure? You can’t because these terms are immovable and set in stone.
3. Minimization. Doing this will make you feel one inch tall. You see, with minimization you assume that your “true potential” is much smaller than it actually is. Always assume that you can do something, never assume that you can’t. Test your distorted assumptions with action.
Figuring out the right mental game when trying to lose arm flab can be very hard if you are using standard self help techniques. Avoiding the above distortions will bring you many steps closer to long term motivation.
