It appears that quite suddenly the cases of autism have become very widespread, which is not a good thing for a disorder that makes it hard for people to communicate. There is such a broad diagnosis for people with autism as some are able to live independently and even hold a job, while others require assistance throughout their entire lives. Anybody wondering “what is autism?” should understand that common autism is a disorder that rests somewhere between those two extremes. Autism does not affect individuals in the same way and can cause developmental delays in some people while allowing others to have exceptional levels of intelligence. Individuals who are afflicted with autism can be silent or chatty, cold or affectionate, disorganized or methodical. Given the great variety of symptoms that sufferers from autism may be afflicted by, they have become known as the ‘Autism Spectrum Disorders’.

The manifestations of autism may vary widely across individuals, however there are traits that are common to people who have it. There are several regular descriptions that are typically used to describe autism but they in no way cover all the individual cases that currently exist. At the same time, for the most part, somebody who is autistic will notice they suffer from difficulties in interacting on a social level and reading. This is not to say that all individuals who have autism can not lead social lives, it merely means they will have certain difficulties with social interactions. Some may display a good deal of proficiency in areas such as technology, engineering or music, but these can be stereotyped as “idiot savants” among autistic individuals and can be unusual in occurrence. It is wrong to think that all autistic people will be highly intelligent or incredibly gifted at certain things.
